Kolkata: In the GATE 2025 exam, candidates can take one or more papers. Some papers are conducted in a single session, while others are held in multiple sessions. GATE score is calculated differently for each paper. For single-session papers, candidate's obtained marks will be used to calculate their GATE result. For multiple-session papers, candidate's obtained marks will be normalized first to ensure fairness, and then their result will be calculated. This score determines their rank.

Candidates aiming for admission to M.Tech, Ph.D., or integrated programs can use GATE cutoff as an important benchmark. For top institutions like IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi, expected GATE scores for competitive fields such as Computer Science (CS) and Electrical Engineering (EE) could range between 750 and 850. These scores are typically higher than the qualifying cutoffs cause the subjects are demanding subjects. For NITs and IIITs, the cutoffs might be slightly lower, ranging from 650 to 750, depending on factors like seat availability and the popularity of the specific branch. Cutoff can be different based on institute and program's competitiveness.

What is the 2025 GATE Cut Off?

Cutoff determines whether a candidate has qualified or not. Those who meet GATE 2025 cutoff criteria can apply for PSU jobs and seek admission to top universities in India for M.Tech, M.E., or Ph.D. programs etc.

What are the Differences between Normalized and Actual GATE Marks?

Actual GATE 2025 marks are the raw marks based on correct and incorrect answers. Normalized marks are adjusted scores calculated using a specific formula to balance differences in difficulty across different exam shifts. These normalized marks are used to determine final GATE 2025 score for papers conducted in multiple sessions.

Actual GATE Marks

  • GATE exam has 65 questions, and the marks are calculated out of 100.
  • For each correct answer, you get 1 or 2 marks (depending on the question).
  • For wrong answers in MCQ-type questions, marks are deducted (1/3 for 1 mark questions and 2/3 for 2 mark questions).
  • No marks are deducted for wrong answers in NAT (Numerical Answer Type) or MSQ (Multiple Select Questions).

Normalized GATE Marks

  • Exam was conducted in multiple shifts (sessions) on GATE 2025 exam date, the difficulty level of the paper may vary between shifts.
  • To ensure fairness, the authorities use a normalization process to adjust the marks. This process ensures that no candidate is at an advantage or disadvantage due to the difficulty level of their shift.
  • Normalization works on the assumption that the average ability of students is similar across all exam shifts.
